I have been sculpting in clay for about thirty years now, I think it's wonderful stuff, in fact I find it very difficult to use anything else. You need very few tools and it is also comparatively cheap. I will show you how to produce sculpture for kiln firing, using stoneware clays which I fire to 1260 degrees C so it is robust and weatherproof.
I will demonstrate how to make the sculpture hollow from the start. Anything that is to be fired (unless it is very small), needs to be hollow, with no closed cavities.
During this three day workshop, I am hoping that you might be able to make two sculptures, maybe even three using two different techniques. There will be two or three different types of clay for you to try.
If you would like to sculpt your dog, cat or favourite animal, bring photos, preferably front, side, back and a few closer up of the face, try to take them on a level with the camera. For those people who are more experienced,
I have custom made sculpture stands so that it is possible to make a sculpture with no feet on the ground, great for leaping or diving animals I have animal books, pictures of skeletons and some examples of what I have made.
I also have plenty of tools, but you may want to bring your own. We should not get too messy, but wear old clothes in case.
I am happy to fire your work and send it to you when it is finished, there will be a charge for this depending on the size of the piece. If you are local, you are welcome to come and colour your work after the first firing. It may be some time before I am able to fire the kiln and send the work
The cost will be £195 including all materials and lunch
We will provide a good lunch everyday, let me know if you have any allergies or other dietary requirements
